Description

The Thooku Vilakku is also known as the ‘Hanging Lamp’ or ‘Holy Lamp’ in the southern part of India. It is a traditional oil lamp hung in temples, the pooja room, the verandah, or as a home decor item in Karalee households. The conventional brass hanging lamp is used as it signifies positivity and knowledge and is also a symbol of prosperity. Typically, the hanging Thooku vilakku has either five grooves or seven grooves. In each groove, wicks dipped in oil are used for lighting and praying to the Goddess.
